This event will also include the launch of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) interregional technical cooperation project to combat Fusarium, and will offer the opportunity to discuss and provide guidance on the next steps in its implementation with researchers from the Member States. from the Latin American and Caribbean region that have joined this initiative.

The event is organized by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIAP), with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and under the auspices of the IAEA.
The international event has face-to-face and virtual presentations by more than ten international experts from different countries, such as China, South Africa, the United States, France, among others. The closing of this event will include the participation of authorities from the national agricultural sector.
This, in a context in which the banana is considered one of the ten main staple foods in the world, and that currently the crops of this item face the threat of Fusarium Race 4 Tropical (FOC R4T), which has already been detected in the region. in Colombia and Peru.
A total of 27 countries worldwide have reported damage to thousands of hectares of bananas. Recent studies estimate that the FOC R4T could extend to 1.6 million hectares by 2040, if not properly controlled.
