BCRP: service sector grew 4.3% in January 2022

According to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), the services sector grew 4.3% in January 2022 compared to the same period last year, supported by the items accommodation and restaurantswhich benefited from the reduction of the curfew and the expansion of capacity.

The entity explained that the restaurant subsector increased 30.4% in the reference period, driven by the longer service hours, flexibility of capacity and greater coverage of delivery services. Meanwhile, the accommodation subsector increased 86.9 percentage points, due to the recovery of the tourism sector and mass vaccination of people.

For its part, the subsector transport and storage grew 9.2% in January compared to the same month of 2021, driven by increased air and rail transport. The telecommunications and other information services sub-item grew 3.5% compared to January 2021; while the financial and insurance subsection fell 7.0% due to lower term deposits.

As for the subsector of services provided to companies, this grew 3.3% due to greater services to all its branches, due to the base effect of the previous year. On the other hand, the other services sector increased by 4%, exceeding pre-pandemic levels for the first time since February 2020.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the services sector increased 0.4% in January of this year compared to the previous month, and exceeded its levels before COVID-19.
