Erkoreka: “Measures will be taken to avoid overexercising some rights in the transport strike”

The Security Minister of the Basque Government has referred to the transport strike and has pointed out that the Security Department “is on top of the matter” and that “it is perfectly aware of the situation and is going to attend to and take the necessary measures to guarantee the public security”.

The Basque Government Security Minister, Josu Erkoreka, has stated that the Ertzaintza “is fully assuming” its functions during the transport strike and that his department will adopt the “necessary measures” to avoid incidents and “overexercising some rights”.

The First Vice-Lehendakari and Security Minister went to the Barakaldo BEC at the beginning of the selective tests to opt for one of the 496 places for an agent on the basic scale of the Ertzaintza and Local Police forces of 31 Basque municipalities.

Responding to questions from the media, Erkoreka referred to the transport strike and pointed out that the Department of Security “is on top of the matter” and that “it is perfectly aware of the situation and is going to take care of it and take the necessary measures to ensure public safety.”

He has indicated that steps will be taken to “avoid” incidents and “excessive or overexercising of some rights” that “they are constitutionally recognized, but they must always be exercised within the scope and limits established by the laws themselves”.

Erkoreka, who did not want to give “specific information on measures and devices that are in place”, has assured that “in general” the Ertzaintza “is fully assuming” its responsibility in the transport strike.

He has affirmed that the Ertzaintza “will exercise the functions that correspond to it” to guarantee “the right to strike of those who own that right and want to exercise it, but also the right to workr of the rest of the citizenship that wants to do it”.

The counselor has pointed out that “there have been organizations”, which he has not wanted to specify, that “they have addressed the Ertzaintza asking for support, backup and protection in a situation that can end up being delicate”. He ensures that these requests are dealt with “one by one” and that “devices and services are being organized” to “give a satisfactory response to everything that is being raised”.

Asked about the request for measures to support the sector made by the Hiru carriers’ union, the deputy lehendakari first pointed out that the Basque Government’s ability to influence the adoption of measures to reduce fuel prices “is enormously limited”.

He assured that “there are other departments” of the Basque Government that “are addressing and promoting” forums and meetings to “address, to the extent that the Basque Government may correspond, the areas of responsibility that have to do with the resolution of this conflict”.
