Peru is one of the leaders in the world production of organic coffee

According to the reports corresponding to the year 2020 provided by the official certification entities, and recently systematized by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture (IFOAM) and the Research Institute of farming Orgánica (FiBL), based in Switzerland, Peru and Ethiopia, have become in recent years the world leaders in the supply of organic coffee, grown 95% by small farmers.

According to the entities, Ethiopia, the African country that is the cradle of coffee, has 183,000 certified hectares, while Peru has 169,078 hectares, revealed the Ministry of Agrarian Development (Midagri) through the National System of Agrarian Health (Senasa). The sum of such areas represents 45.81% of the world production of organic coffee, which covers 768,445 hectares.

It should be noted that Peru registers a greater supply of grains, estimating the 2020 harvest at 2 million 198,000 quintals, with a yield of 598 kilos per hectare, while Ethiopia’s production reaches 2 million 104,000 quintals, with a harvest of 529 kilos per hectare. In turn, Mexico offers 915,000 quintals of green grain, collected from 82,525 hectares.

“The development of organic coffee farming in Peru corresponds to 30 years of work by the National Coffee Board (JNC), through cooperatives and associations. A silent job aimed at improving prices for producers, and direct access to international markets. We took advantage of a market opportunity to promote this specialty product option,” said Lorenzo Castillo, manager of the coffee union.

The leading regions

The recent reports of Senasa they locate Cajamarca as the leading region with organic coffee production with 58,300 certified hectares. They are followed by Junín with 55,176 hectares, Amazonas with 15,041 hectares and San Martín with 14,996 hectares.

“Organic coffee represents 49.33% of certified organic agriculture in the country, which has 342,700 hectares, in charge of 107,367 producers, of which 53.22% are organic coffee growers,” Castillo said.

Regarding organic coffee exports, these amounted to 1 million 350,000 quintals during 2020, a fact associated with various complementary seals, especially fair trade and others categorized as sustainable. The value of these coffee categories totaled more than US$260 million, including premiums for cup quality.
