Basque carriers join the indefinite strike called at the state level starting Monday

The autonomous carriers grouped in the HIRU union seek to achieve objectives in two directions: to adapt transport rates to current costs, and for the Navarrese and Basque governments to adopt measures to support the sector.

The truckers’ union HIRU, meeting this morning in assembly in Altsasu, has decided support the call for indefinite strike carried out by the Spanish Platform for the Defense of the Road Freight Transport Sector, as a way to deal with an “unaffordable” situation.

From Monday, vans and trucks will stop and mobilize to demand that measures be taken to achieve objectives in two senses; pressure, on the one hand, to the loader, to manage to raise and adapt the rates to current costs, and demand, on the other hand, measures to administrations -Government of Navarra and the Basque Government- to rescue the sector.

Sergún explains Alberto Núñez Corral, a HIRU technician, “the situation is critical, the rise in the price of fuel has meant that the cost of transport is not affordable”; he clarifies that “there is no margin for profitability, and in some cases, not even to cover expenses”.

The carrier Patxi Agirre warns that the sector is “totally out of control and abandoned by the hand of God.” He calls the situation “unaffordable”. He explains that if companies are beginning to value closing down because they cannot bear production costs, they are already in that situation. “Of course, if the companies want the merchandise to move, they are going to have to adjust the prices to the costs of diesel,” he points out.
