Goldman Sachs becomes first major US bank to leave Russia

The American merchant bank Goldman Sachs announced on Thursday its withdrawal from Russia, thus becoming the first major Wall Street bank to distance itself from Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine.

“Goldman Sachs is ending its activities in Russia, in accordance with regulatory and licensing requirements,” a spokeswoman said in a message to AFP.

“We focus on accompanying our clients around the world in the management or closing of pre-existing obligations in the market and the guarantee of the well-being of our collaborators”, he added.

According to its latest annual report, the firm’s exposure in Russia reached 650 million dollars in 2021. Goldman Sachs does not give details on the number of employees in the country.

Citi Groupwhich had a total exposure of $9.8 billion in Russia at the end of December, said for its part on Wednesday that “He evaluated (his) operations in the country.”

This bank announced at the end of 2021 that it seeks to divest its retail operations in Russia. (I)
