US President Joe Biden will announce this Tuesday the ban on imports of oil, natural gas and coal from Russia, in a new measure of pressure on Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine, according to several US media.
The White House has sent an update on the presidential agenda that includes an intervention at 10:45 local time (15:45 GMT) on Russia.
“The president will announce measures to continue to hold Russia accountable for its unwarranted and unwarranted war in Ukraine,” the presidential office said.
The ban on energy imports from Russia, one of the largest global producers, would be only by Washington, since the European allies, much more dependent on Russian energy, have shown their reluctance in this regard.
US oil imports from Russia account for about 8% of the total, while in the European case it is 27%, according to the respective official data.
This Monday, the president of Ukraine, VolodÃmir Zelenski, was in favor of the international community approving the cancellation of Russian oil purchases.
“You can call it an embargo or a moral act when you refuse to give money to terrorists,” Zelensky said in a video message.
The ban on energy imports from Russia by the US adds to the aggressive economic sanctions recently adopted against Moscow in coordination with European partners, including the restriction of international operations of the Russian central bank and the suspension of certain banks Russians of the international SWIFT system.
