MEF reiterates its commitment to recover Camisea gas without nationalization

After a beginning of the week marked by interdictions from different political actors about the relevance or risk of “nationalizing Camisea gas”, the head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Pedro Francke, came to the fore and reiterated that the commitment of the president Pedro Castillo to bring the resource to all the homes of the country does not mean affecting private activity through the nationalization of the deposit.

In a message on his social networks, regarding a previous clarification from the president himself, Francke emphasized the unrestricted respect for the freedom of company during the process of massification of fuel and the construction of a gas pipeline in the south. “Nationalizing the Camisea gas means putting it at the service of Peruvians and, in particular, of our compatriots in the south. It does not mean in any way nationalizing private activity. The massification of gas for the benefit of Peruvians is our commitment ”, he stressed.

For Aurelio Ochoa, a specialist in energy issues, this debate around the differences between “nationalizing” and “nationalizing” the Camisea gas has deep roots in the South American region, but at a legal level in Peru it is inconsistent given the conditions current market.

“We can infer, from this message, that what the Government seeks is to prioritize the domestic market, and the foreign market will not be prioritized, where – at this moment – more than 50% is exported. It would be necessary to rescue that part in which Francke explains that nationalization is not synonymous with expropriation or nationalization. It would be good to guide people who are still doubtful and explain that today in Peru a nationalization would be unfeasible, it is ruled out, “he said.

Likewise, the former president of Perupetro He recalled that up to five candidates in the electoral campaign this year offered to reformulate the natural gas export contract for Block 56, so the issue of sitting down to talk with the private sector “is nothing new.”
