New day of strike today in the residences of Gipuzkoa, called by ELA and LAB

The housing sector protests continue today and November 12. In addition, tomorrow there will be strikes and rallies. They demand a new agreement and update the catalog of ratios to end the precariousness of the sector.

The ELA and LAB unions continue with the strikes to denounce the “serious” and “shameful” situation of the residences for the elderly in Gipuzkoa. Both today and next November 12 will be days of strike in the Gipuzkoan residences.

In addition, tomorrow, Friday, there will be a day of unemployment in which the workers of residences will concentrate in some twenty centers of different localities, with a central act in the Txara center of San Sebastián.

LAB has recalled in a statement published these past days that it has been “denouncing the reality” of a sector for years in which the “crisis” caused by the pandemic “has crudely revealed the shortcomings of nursing homes” that , on the other hand, “they are not new”.

“The workers are leaving their health at work”, denounces the central abertzale, which also criticizes the attitude of the “institutions and companies” to this problem that, in their opinion, makes the conflict seem like something of “the workers, residents and their families”, when the “situation affects to the whole society “.

After explaining that the sector of residences for the elderly, “based on care”, is “aimed at dependent people and is financed with public money”, LAB regrets that its workers have to do their work “precariously”, without the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council has shown “no intention to change the situation.”

“The workers, once again, have shown their professionalism and are giving the best they have in this difficult and complicated situation, because they love the residents and will also continue to fight in defense of their rights,” emphasizes LAB.

“To find a solution to this conflict at once it is essential talk about the provincial agreement and the ratios catalog that determine the number of female workers, “he adds.

“This system, based on privatization, increases the precariousness in which we workers live and has a direct impact on the care received by residents,” insists LAB, while reiterating its commitment to “the publication” of this sector and for “reactivating collective bargaining and unblocking this conflict.”

County Council Report

The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa presented yesterday the results of a satisfaction survey carried out among the users of the residences and professionals of the sector.

As explained by the deputy for Social Policies, Maite Peña, and those responsible for the survey, Javier Castro and Álex Gómez, in a press conference the results of this work, in which a total of 2,026 people participated; specifically, 247 residents, 660 family members and 1,119 professionals, among whom 112 have also participated in 14 contrast workshops organized to deepen the answers.

According to the data collected, between users the percentage of satisfaction rises to 77,2 %, while the families value the quality of care in a 73,5 % and the professionals they do it to a lesser extent, the 62,7 %.

The survey has yielded unexpected conclusions regarding the staff ratios, an aspect that has been placed, according to the report, in the last position in “areas for improvement”, so no direct relationship has been observed between the ratios and the perception of the quality of the service.

However, Peña has indicated that in Gipuzkoa there are “the highest ratios, no matter where we look at it”, which constitutes, he insisted, “an objective question”.
