Import of video game consoles decreased 48% due to shortage of microchips

The Peruvian import of game consoles video game, the most demanded in the Christmas season, registered a decrease of 48% during the period July to September of this year after acquiring 41,830 units for a value of 2,400,000 dollars, according to the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam).

This figure is lower when compared to the similar period of 2020, during which 79,951 units valued at 5 million 500 thousand dollars were reported.

The lower volume imported is due, among other factors, to the shortage of microchips that come mainly from Taiwan, added to the problems in the supply chain generated by the global container crisis ”, explained the executive director of the Idexcam, Carlos Posada.

Pasada explained that the lower production of these chips, a situation that could last until 2022, will affect this christmas campaign Because it is also used in other toys and electronic devices that are part of what is considered the Internet of Things (IoT).

Added to this, the Toshiba company, the main manufacturer of electrical and electronic devices, said that many of its customers will not receive all their orders until 2023.
