Regulation of online betting will allow raising more than S / 160 million

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Roberto Sánchez, said yesterday that his ministry is promoting a bill to regulate games and sports betting on the Internet, alleging that local and foreign companies operate in the local market “without leave benefits for society”.

In this sense, the minister estimated that the item mobilized S / 4,500 million during 2020, with a rate of approximately 150,000 daily bets.

“By applying 12% of the direct taxes to this activity, the annual collection will allow to collect more than S/ 160 million per year,” the official emphasized.

In addition, he recalled that online betting and gaming are activities not regulated by the State, and by evading taxes, capital leaves our country to tax havens such as Malta and Curaçao, among others.

Minister Sánchez specified that by raising tax revenues with the eventual regulation, sectors such as sports and regional tourism will benefit, as there is greater investment.

“The Government is working on reforms to bring well-being to the population. We respect free trade, but with responsible companies that pay taxes on gambling, consumption and online advertising, but must have duly authorized permits in Peru”, he noted.

Likewise, the official noted that this initiative —to be evaluated in the next sessions of the Council of Ministers— will guarantee transparency in the game, the prevention of fraud, money laundering and will prevent money laundering, as well as the protection of vulnerable sectors such as minors and gamblers, after authorizing the control and supervision of internet betting businesses.
