“Nationalizing Camisea gas would be the worst business Peru could do,” says Pedro Gamio

Former Deputy Minister of Energy Pedro Gamio warned that President Pedro Castillo’s proposal to nationalize Camisea gas “would be the worst business Peru could do.” In this regard, he pointed out that our country has methane gas in abundance, “but since it cannot reduce methane gas because it requires a consistent work plan, networks and a system that will not be so fast, subsidizes a fuel that is not the one we have in abundance and burns fiscal resources”.

With this, the former official showed his disagreement with the return of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund. “LPG began to be subsidized and Now we have a problem that a lot of Peruvians who bet on LPG and the price has gone through the roof. They begin to think: Why didn’t I switch to methane gas at the time? ”he mentioned on Radio Exitosa.

In this context, Gamio stressed that it is time for the State to execute an “aggressive” plan to massify natural gas in order to provide greater benefits to Peruvian families and related sectors such as transportation, electricity and industry.

“That is the formula that will give a defense in the economy against a scenario where the price of a barrel of oil at any moment goes to 100 dollars,” he added.

On the inclusion of diesel in the Stabilization Fund

Gamio also spoke out against the inclusion of diesel in the Price Stabilization Fund as part of the agreement reached between the Government and interprovincial carriers to suspend the stoppage of this Tuesday, October 26.

This can mean losing 9 million soles per day, subsidizing a fuel that is polluting, that we mostly import, much more expensive and going back to the mistake of using an analgesic instead of a sustainable solution ”, he concluded.
