The new super cluster integrates Iberdrola, Petronor and the industrial clusters that operate in the Basque Autonomous Community. Its objective is to accelerate the reduction of emissions in the industrial sector and become a pioneer territory in the decarbonization of the industry.
The Basque Government, Iberdrola, Petronor and the industrial clusters of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) presented “Basque Net Zero Industrial” this morning. It is a concentration of interconnected companies and institutions in a particular field for competition whose main objective is to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
Ahead of the UN climate summit (COP26) in Glasgow, it will also join the global World Economic Forum (WEF) program to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions in the industrial sector.
The Basque Government’s Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, Arantxa Tapia, and representatives of Iberdrola, Petronor, the 16 Basque clusters and the Basque business development agency (SPRI) participated in this morning’s presentation.
The participants hope that the initiative will offer opportunities for Basque companies, derived from the development of new technologies and innovative services. They also contemplate that qualified jobs will be created in new technologies.
Progressive start-up
In the first phase, which will begin on November 3 with its launch in Glasgow, the focus will be on five industries whose total emissions exceed 65% of the total emissions of the Basque industry: Refining, Steel, Foundry, Cement and Pasta and paper.
Thus, this initiative will promote the implementation of projects and initiatives in the four development areas defined by the World Economic Forum: energy efficiency, renewable electrification, hydrogen and CO2 capture.
In these areas and especially during the initial phase, Iberdrola and Petronor, in coordination with the Cluster Associations of the prioritized Industrial sectors, will lead the development of initiatives and projects.
