Peruvian handicraft exports grew by 49.4% during 2021

The export of Peruvian crafts reached US$ 41,695,000 and achieved a growth of 49.4% compared to 2020 (US$ 27,905,000), as well as 3.8% compared to 2019 (US$ 40 million 172 thousand), so it still does not reach the figures of previous years, reported the Manufacturing Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

The president of the union’s Crafts Committee, Orlando Vásquez, indicated that the positive variation responds to a rebound effect of the economy and the low comparison base of 2020 —when COVID-19 affected productive activities—, but highlighted the resilience of companies in the sector to resume their activities and their gradual recovery.

“Last year was a year of recovery, even exceeding the pre-pandemic amounts, but we cannot lower our arms because the objective is to exceed the historical amounts. from previous years, such as 2012 (US$ 65,803,000)”, he explained.

On the other hand, he indicated that before the entry of the new Government there was an agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) to form the Technical Table of Crafts; however, this initiative has not yet been taken up by the new management.

“This table would serve as a space for dialogue between all the actors of the craft activity and the State with the aim of solving the different problems facing our sector. Unfortunately, to date we do not have any information or contact with the Mincetur representatives who would be in charge of the matter. We hope they can give it the respective priority in the coming days,” said Vásquez.

Destinations

According to figures from Commercial Intelligence System ADEX Data Trade, The US continues to be the main destination for shipments of Peruvian handicrafts adding US$ 26 million 286 thousand last year, which meant an increase of 63.7% in its demand and concentrated 63% of the total.

“As a result of the container crisis, North American customers are turning more to the Latin American market and that is a great opportunity to take advantage of. However, it is urgent to train the members of our chain more in order to adapt the processes and products according to the requirements, and thus be considered as main suppliers”, Vásquez said.

Other markets were Germany (increase of 64.4%), Canada (90.1%), the United Kingdom (6.5%) and Chile (282.8%). Completing the top 10 are Japan, Italy, Switzerland, China, Aruba and France, who reached a total of 46 markets.
