In 2021 remittances reached US$ 3,592 million, reported the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), thus recovering the levels before the crisis caused by COVID-19, growing 22.2% compared to the previous year. In addition, it represented 1.6% of GDP. The entity specifies that, historically, it is the highest level, achieving an increase of 8% compared to 2019.
In the last five years, more than 3.2 billion dollars, on average, were remitted annually to Peruvian families by a member of the household residing abroad, which contributes to the improvement of the family economy and the development of the country. .
According to information from the National Household Survey (Enaho) of 2020 and according to the frequency of receiving remittances, it can be seen that the 62.7% of remittances are received monthly11.5% semiannually, 10.0% annually, 8.6% bimonthly, 6.5% quarterly, and to a lesser extent (0.3%) weekly or fortnightly.
Depending on the destination of the remittances received, 87.8% of remittances received from abroad are used for household expenses such as food, clothing, transportation, communications, among others; 7.3% for education; 3.8% housing; 1.0% savings and 0.1% for other expenses.
Call to participate in the survey of Peruvians abroad
The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) also announced that the execution of the II World Survey of the Peruvian Community Abroad has been extended until the end of March. That is why it reiterates the invitation to all compatriots living abroad to participate in this important statistical investigation that is carried out jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru and the Peruvian Consulates located in countries around the world.
It is the second time after ten years that the survey has been carried out to obtain updated information on the main demographic, social, economic characteristics, vulnerability, migratory situation and connection with Peru of Peruvians residing abroad.with emphasis on the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to serve as a decision-making tool for public and private institutions, and structure better policies in favor of Peruvian migrants.

The population under study are all our compatriots aged 18 years or older. with residence in the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and America; and the frame of reference is the number of Peruvians registered by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) abroad.
The INEI emphasizes to the Peruvian Community abroad that all the information provided will be protected according to Law 29733, Personal Data Protection Law. In addition, it specifies that the data provided in the form is protected and encrypted for the security of informants.
