The Provincial Council of Bizkaia will remodel the current toll for the Artxanda tunnels to enable contactless payment within the framework of a digitalization strategy and technological unification of the management systems of the territory’s toll roads.
The project for Artxanda is in the drafting phase and the work, which could begin after the summer, has a budget greater than €3.6 million and an execution period of eleven months, as reported by the regional institution in a statement.
The project maintains the current design of seven central lanes in which you can pay in cash, by card or through the electronic toll, and the lateral lanes will be replaced by gantries equipped with the technology-based payment system “barrier free”.
This action is part of the toll digitization plan, in which 4.4 million euros have already been invested and which also covers the AP-8, the Variante Sur Metropolitana, in which payment with cards is already possible without contact, and now to the Artxanda tunnels themselves.
At this time, the main payment method on the Biscayan toll roads is the Vía T, followed by cards and, lastly, cash.
In 2021, of the 32.3 million traffics, ViaT presented 21.9 million uses (67.8%), cards 6.6 million uses (20.35%) and cash 3.8 million uses (11.85%).
