Ranking Merco 2021: these were the most responsible companies in Peru in the last year

Last Wednesday, February 9, the Corporate Reputation Business Monitor (Merco) presented the “ESG Responsibility MERCO 2021” ranking for Peru.

The annual list includes the 100 best companies with social, environmental and corporate governance practices; likewise, it breaks down into more than 30 categories under these same criteria.

The overall ranking of the best companies with greater responsibility SGS (Environment, Social and Governance) of 2021 is led by the Brazilian cosmetics company Nature with 10,000 points. In relation to the result of the previous year, the corporation climbed four positions.

“This recognition is a reflection of our great social, environmental and transparency commitment, through our interest in education, care for the environment, working together with the communities of the Amazon and legal responsibility,” said the Brazilian multinational.

Ferreycorp continues on the list with 9,615 points, BACKUS AB InBev (9,505), Interbank (9,481) and Banco de Credito del Peru closes the top five with 9,106 units. Scotiabank, Nestlé, BBVA, Calidda and Alicorp are also in the top 10 places.

Results by categories

The Merco 2021 ESG Responsibility Ranking includes 38 categories. These include the energy, beverage, food, banking, industrial, oil and gas sectors, among others.

At oil and gas industryCálidda ranks first, beating companies such as Repsol, Peteroperú, Primax and Pluspetrol.

In this regard, Martín Mejía del Carpio, general director of Cálidda, mentioned being proud of the result obtained. “Since the start of the pandemic, we have set out to continue working for our customers and their families, without stopping the supply of Natural Gas and taking part in solidarity and sustainable initiatives,” he highlighted.

Meanwhile, the beverage category ranked Backus AB InBev in first place. In that sense, the brewery also highlighted that this is the tenth consecutive year in the top three of Peruvian companies more responsible on ESG.

“This recognition is the result of the commitment we have for being a social actor that always seeks to contribute to the improvement of the community with initiatives in five drivers: entrepreneurship, responsible consumption, care of water resources, circular packaging and sustainable agriculture,” said Sergio Rincón , president of Backus AB InBev Peru.

For its part, the energy category is led by the French multinational ENGIE. In addition, this company is the only company in this category to be part of the top 100 of the general ranking.

“This recognition reinforces our commitment and conviction to continue acting responsibly from every front: environmental, social and good corporate governance. This has been possible thanks to the team and their dedication to fulfilling our purpose as a company”, said Rik De Buyserie, CEO and Country Manager of ENGIE in Peru.

Finally, in the air transport division, the list was headed by LATAM Airlines, which also ranks 42nd among the most responsible companies in Merco Responsibility 2021.

“LATAM Peru thus consolidates itself as a leader in the aeronautical sector, highlighting its commitment to protecting ecosystems, migrating to a zero-waste model for landfills, and making its connectivity capacity available for the benefit of communities in the region” , highlighted the company.
