Anglo-Americanparent company of the mine Quellavecoin Moquegua, confirmed that the operation called to be one of the main copper projects in the world will advance the payment of Income Tax (IR) from its first year of production, and not when it begins to obtain profits.
During the last Mining Thursday of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP), the vice president of Corporate Affairs of Anglo American Quellaveco, Diego Ortega, said that they plan to contribute to the treasury through the payment of royalties and the IEM in the short term.
“What I want to confirm is that we started this year with the payment of royalties and the Special Mining Tax (IEM). The IR will come a year later, because we have no interest in avoiding paying it once we reach the peak of ‘performance’d of the operation”, said the executive.
In this sense, Anglo American is betting that its US$5.5 billion operation will reach peaks of 330,000 tons of copper concentrates extracted by 2023, although, for now, they continue to process the obtaining of their operating license.
“This year we started operations and commissioning. Start the “ramp up” (increase in production) as well. We hope to reach the end of 2022 in full production, something that in 2023 we could already start with that goal that we have of 330,000 tons”, he pointed out.
“We are not going to wait a certain number of years to pay the canon,” Ortega added.
At another point, he highlighted that Quellaveco established a dialogue table in 2012, where they adopted 26 commitments on social responsibility, environmental protection and proper use of resources with the communities in the areas of influence. Therefore, he expressed his concern about the change of authorities in this new stage.
“Definitely, there is going to be a significant impact by canon in the region. I insist on the need to start planning today how the population of Moquegua is really going to feel that this canon is used efficiently”, he remarked.
