Formal employment grew in August for the first time since the start of the pandemic, according to BCRP

According to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), total formal employment at the national level increased 0.9% in August 2021 compared to August 2019, registering for the first time a positive rate of expansion since the beginning of the pandemic.

However, in the January-August period, employment still registered a decrease of 0.7 percentage points with respect to the same period of 2019. In relation to 2020, this variable increased 6.8% in August and 2.7 percent in the first eight months.

By geographical area, Lima continues to record negative rates compared to 2019.

In addition, in August, 325 thousand private sector companies reported employment information, with which the number of companies grew 3.4 percent compared to the same month in 2019 (6.7 percent compared to the same period in 2020) .

Particularly in August, the number of companies with less than 10 workers, about 12 thousand more companies, that report employment compared to August 2019.

Private formal jobs presented a negative percentage variation of 0.9 points in August compared to the same month of 2019, the lowest drop since March 2020. In the January-August period they fell by 3.8% compared to the same period 2019. Compared to 2020, private employment increased 8.8 percent in August and 2.1 percent in the January-August period.

This reduction in formal employment in the private sector compared to 2019 occurred mainly in the service and manufacturing sectors. In contrast, the construction, agriculture and mining sectors registered positive rates.
