Chicken and fish prices maintain a downward trend

By Fernando Cuadros/URPI

in various markets of Metropolitan LimaThe Republic was able to observe that the price of food such as chicken and fish has been reduced considerably compared to previous months.

During the past year, for example, chicken exceeded peaks of S/ 10 per kilogram, but now it can be found from S/ 5.50 —for a whole one— to S/ 6.50 —for the cut-up— in the Mercado Cooperativa San Gabriel of Villa Maria del Triunfo (VMT).

While at the Conzac market in Los Olivos, whole chicken has been priced at S/ 6.00 for wholesale purchases for 15 days, and at S/ 6.50 for the general public.

On the other hand, in the El Bosque market, on av. Próceres de San Juan de Lurigancho, a kilo starts at S/ 6.70, almost half, considering that it was worth S/ 12.00 during 2021. In Zárate, a kilo of whole chicken is offered at S/ 5.00 .

“As the chicken goes down, there is more demand. The price per kilo is s/ 6.70 and a whole chicken costs up to 15 soles, what used to cost 30 soles before,” said a merchant.

How does the fish come?

In this same area, it was found that the price of bonito has remained at S/ 4.00 per kilo since January, as well as mullet and mackerel at S/ 6.00 and S/ 3.00, respectively. Regarding the parrot, the kilo rose to S/ 16.00 for three days, although wholesale is sold at S/ 12.50.

“Because of oil, the perico had dropped, but now it seems that the wholesalers are not going in to fish. They tell us that it is closed, that it does not come out much. The landladies complain. When it goes up, little is brought, ”says Lucía Velásquez, a local vendor.

Returning to El Bosque de SJL, here a kilo of bonito does not fall below S/ 4.00 along with mackerel and hake. The lorna is located at S/ 5.00 and the horse mackerel, at S/ 3.00.

Meanwhile, the Bolívar market in Free town offers in some of its stands a kilo of bonito, horse mackerel and mackerel at between S/ 6.50 and S/ 7.00.

Alicia García, a merchant in the area, acknowledges that this price has been maintained for months, although the volume of sales has decreased due to the recent oil contamination caused by Repsol on the coast of the capital.

“Before almost 30 kilos a day were sold, now 10 kilos are sold because of the Repsol oil spill. People come with fear and doubts. Sales are down,” he noted.

The potato is expensive

In San Gabriel (VMT), they warn that the yungay potato has risen to S/ 2.60 and the yellow potato has skyrocketed to S/ 4.00.

In Pueblo Libre, the price of potatoes for five days went from S/ 4.00 to S/ 4.50. The white potato, from S/ 2.50 to S/ 3.00.

In Los Olivos, the large yellow potato went from S/ 2.50 to S/ 3.50.
