One last poll of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows a growth in confidence in the sector, since 59% of global airline managers expect their profits to increase in 2022, and the percentage that considers that demand will increase rises to 91%.
In the last quarter of 2021, 83% of the airline managers surveyed reported an increase in business profits, while demand grew in 95% of cases, according to the report, which shows greater prospects for improvement in traffic passenger than cargo.
The union highlighted that those surveyed showed optimism, and stress that the expected progress will depend on the evolution of the current wave of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the increase in fuel prices and the growing competition in the sector.
Likewise, in the last three months of 2021, only 31% of those surveyed indicated that the workforce of their airlines increased, while in 38% of cases it remained unchanged, although by 2022, 59% expect the possibilities to grow. of employment.
On the other hand, 55% of airlines reported an increase in costs between October and December 2021, mainly due to the rise in fuel, and the same percentage expects the increase to continue throughout that year.
Air transport has been one of the economic sectors hardest hit by the pandemic, which reduced demand by 65.8% in 2021 and 58% in 2020 (in both cases the figures are compared with those of 2019, the last previous year to the health crisis).
