Truck and tractor-trailer sales grew 25.3% in January compared to the pre-pandemic level

The Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) reported that the sale of new vehicles registered mixed results at the end of last January. In the case of heavy goods, the sale of trucks and tractor-trailers showed an expansion of 25.3% compared to the same month of 2020, shortly before the pandemic began in Peru.

“The difference in behavior is due to the dissimilar recovery between the different economic activities in the country,” said the AAP in its report.

In this way, and with information from the National Superintendence of Public Registries (Sunarp), it was learned that the sale of new light vehicles (sector made up of cars, trucks, pick-ups and vans, station wagons, SUVs and SUVs) reached 14,245 units in January 2022.

“This figure is 13.4% higher compared to the same month of the previous year, while if we compare it with January 2020 —before the pandemic— we observe a decrease of 1.2%,” he noted. alberto morisakiManager of Economic Studies of the AAP.

For Morisaki, the annual growth registered by the sale of light vehicles responds to the dynamism in the sale of SUVs, pick-ups and vans.

“The positive performance of pick-ups and vans was influenced by the increased demand from companies and individuals, who acquire this type of units for the transport of goods or home deliveries, in a context of improvement in the various economic activities, including wholesale and retail trade.

Demand for heavy vehicles on the rise

The commercialization of heavy vehicles registered an uneven behavior at the beginning of 2022. The sale of trucks and tractor-trailers reached 1,235 units, an expansion of 6.1% compared to January 2021, and 25.3% compared to the first month of 2020 (remember that the pandemic arrived in Peru in March).

Morisaki confirms that growth responds to the greater dynamism of the various economic sectors, after the gradual reduction of the restrictions implemented by the Government to contain COVID-19.

“The recovery of the activities that require these vehicles, such as mining, construction, manufacturing, among others, has allowed the truck and tractor-trailer market to recover its sales levels observed prior to the viral outbreak,” he said.

Minibuses and buses also on the rise

The sale of minibuses and buses closed the first month of 2022 with 178 units sold, a figure 19.8% and 54.9% lower than in January 2021 and 2020, respectively. The result reported in the month of analysis has followed the trend shown by said segment since 2021.

“The pandemic significantly hit the Transportation sector, the same one that has been recovering, although not at the same speed as the rest of the economic activities, due to the fact that capacity and movement restrictions were maintained for almost the entire year, at the national. These factors have not allowed the demand for buses and minibuses to reach the sales level observed prior to the pandemic.”

Motorcycles and tricycles in January 2022

On the other hand, the sale of minor vehicles (motorcycles and three-wheelers) totaled 31,210 units at the end of last January, a number lower by 5.6% compared to the first month of 2021, although compared to January 2020 an increase of 23 was observed. .9%.

When breaking down the information, it can be seen that the sale of motorcycles rose to 21,778 units, exceeding the level observed in January of last year by 1.5% and by 43.3% in relation to January 2020.

“In this case, the increase responds to the need of the population to continue to mobilize by safe means that allow maintaining social distancing in the current context in which we find ourselves, in the midst of the third wave of COVID-19,” Morisaki points out. .

Similarly, the higher demand is also explained by the intensive use in activities related to home delivery. Finally, the sale of three-wheelers reached 9,432 units in January, a lower figure of 18.7% and 5.7% compared to January 2021 and 2020, respectively.

AAP: mixed expectations for 2022

The organization said that it expects that sales of new vehicles during 2022 will register a slight increase, in line with the growth of the economy.

“The dynamism shown by the majority of economic sectors, added to the recovery of the labor market, would boost internal demand, and would lead the GDP to expand between 2% and 3%, supporting the increase in the level of vehicle sales,” explained the official. specialist.

However, the level of sales could be disadvantaged by global stock problems, due to the scarcity of some supplies necessary for the production of vehicles, in addition to the fact that ports around the world are not fully operational.

“Added to some structural problems regarding logistics and port infrastructure, a situation that has increased the cost of freight, factors that could hit the vehicle supply,” he concluded.
