The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) reported that during 2021, it supervised more than 45,000 flights at the Jorge Chávez International Airport with the aim of ensuring the suitability of the service and preventing damage to users due to delays or cancellations for reasons attributed to the airlines.
In this sense, Indecopi recalled that when the flights are delayed or canceled for reasons attributed to the airline, airlines are required to provide food, lodging, transportation and/or compensation, as appropriate.
Likewise, the institution constantly informed passengers that the price they pay for an air ticket must include the taxescommissions and applicable charges.
“Consumers cannot be forced to pay additional amounts or surcharges to the price offered, except in the case of different or additional services, provided that they have been previously informed in an appropriate and timely manner. In case the prices are advertised in foreign currency, the supplier is obliged to accept payment in the announced currency or in national currency, the latter having to be announced in characters and conditions equal to those of the foreign currency, including the exchange rate”. Indecopi points out through a statement.
The office located in the Jorge Chavez Airport managed to attend to more than 1,956 claims, of which 37% were resolved through conciliation between consumers and companies. It also provided 8,527 free consultations, through the institution’s Subdirectorate for Citizen Services, on consumer rights, respect for intellectual property and the promotion of competition.
