With an investment of $191,803 (167,505 euros), the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) plans to expand its statistical observatory, in order to turn it into a pioneering tool at the national and regional level, which will collect information from levels of production, import and export of bananas.
The banana export sector closed 2021 with the shipment of 376 million boxes, 2.5% less than 2020

AEBE represents 70% of the country’s banana exports.
In this way, it is planned to strengthen the capacities of 4,792 small producers, so that they can make use of the information as a tool to improve productivity performance and to reduce the levels of waste, that is, the volume of fruit that does not meets quality standards for export.
Ragna John, coordinator of the Ecuador Sustainable Chain Project, indicated that GIZ has great expectations regarding this cooperation that will strengthen and create connectivity in the banana sector in a sustainable manner.
$100 million loan from the European Investment Bank will finance water supply and sanitation projects in Ecuador
“For GIZ, it is a pleasure to be able to collaborate with AEBE in order to provide added value focused on small producers”, said the director.
For his part, José Antonio Hidalgo, executive director of AEBE said that this inter-institutional cooperation the ratifies union’s commitment to the sector and the country to the extend and enhance the Observatory Statistical Bananero, to turn it into a tool powerful national and international level .
