This Thursday, the National Society of Industries (SNI) expressed his support for the artisanal fishermen of Ventanilla affected by the oil spill caused by Repsol.
According to Alfonso Miranda, president of the SNI Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee, The group rejects the damage to “the base and main support” of the sector’s production chain, and condemns the fact that the ecological catastrophe has not been remedied for three weeks “largest of our sea in all its history”.
“We come to say that the artisanal fishermen, their families and the affected population cannot be given a tip. They have to be compensated fairly with everything that was their life expectancy and income. Nothing less than that corresponds to them. We come to give our solidarity, and our technical and legal support if that were the case, ”he told La República.
On the other hand, Miranda estimated that the total number of people affected in the area of the spill is no less than 3,500 artisanal fishermen – an amount higher than the 2,600 registered so far by the Government for the delivery of a possible bonus -, but it would be necessary to add to the universe of beneficiaries those who live from tourism and have their businesses during the summer and the beach season.
“The State must make a quantification of the damage caused and what is not produced. A compensation that is in accordance with the expectations of the population and not a capricious and always insufficient bonus”, she stressed.
Finally, he argued that if immediate action had been taken to clean up the oil spill, the ecosystem could have been rectified in six months.
In his turn, Roberto Espinoza, president of the Bahía Blanca National Defense Association, stressed that it is Repsol’s duty to reverse the damage caused by destroying the Ventanilla ecosystem, and urged them to speak out to clarify what the compensation process will be like before the cessation of their work activities and meet the expenses of their homes. “The Government is going to give a bonus but this is not going to solve what has happened. That Repsol pronounce itself once and for all”, he stated.
