As reported by the Basque government In a note, the increase in unemployment “is always bad news, because we are talking about people who are looking for a job and can’t find it. And today there are more people unemployed than a month ago.”

However, they point out that it is something that happens historically. In this sense, they have explained that, in January, “the contracts made to meet the increased demand at Christmas will end”. In fact, this increase occurs in the services sector, while in industry and construction unemployment decreases.

“This occurs in the three territories. Consequently, the most affected are women, the majority of the new unemployed,” they point out, insisting that this increase is directly related to temporary contracts.

Despite this bad data, “today, there are fewer people unemployed than before the outbreak of the pandemic and less than a year ago. But we need a labor framework that reduces temporary and precarious contracts and that contemplates dismissal as last option,” they say.
