Sectional governments of 13 provinces spent $2.44 million on Christmas celebrations

The Social Expenditure Observatory, an NGO interested in monitoring public spending, raised the list, led by Guayas

The sectional governments of thirteen provinces in the country made important expenses related to Christmas celebrations and events in December. In these jurisdictions, paid companies or individuals for the organization of events, lighting, entertainment, among other festive activities, at least 2.44 million. A report from the Social Expenditure Observatory of the Citizenship and Development Foundation reveals that despite the country’s economic problems, several sectional governments made onerous expenses in this type of event.

The province of Guayas stood out above other provinces in 2021 for its Christmas spending. Its authorities, from the different public entities, allocated $ 1′257.411,48 of its resources for the organization of shows, decoration and cultural events to celebrate Christmas. This is 50% of the total registered.

The most onerous payment was recorded in the Municipality of Milagro, which allocated $321,124 for the organization and start-up of an activity called Live Christmas from your home, aimed at children from various sectors of the canton.

The company Municipal Tourism, Civic Promotion and International Relations of Guayaquil disbursement $134,859.81 in Christmas decorations for the Plaza de la Administración, the small square of Imbabura street, Luzárraga street and Panamá street. From that same entity was paid $40,000 for the organization of the artistic show La Navidad de Juan Pueblo and his friends; and, an additional $35,000 for the Christmas show Fantasy of elves and fairies.

Other events paid for by the Municipal Company were the Choirs and Dances festival, at a cost of $20,000; the crystal Christmas music and dance shows, for $16,830, and three other shows for a total of $33,000.

In the second place of ranking this Emeralds at a much lower expense of $318,980. Then this Pichincha, with $297,258; and, Tungurahua, with $136,499. The rest of the provinces that signed contracts for some type of Christmas event were: Chimborazo, Imbabura, El Oro, Loja, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Morona Santiago and Los Ríos, which registered expenses of less than $100,000.

In Esmeraldas, the Christmas activity promoted by the public sector was divided between its central city, Esmeraldas; in addition to the municipalities of Quinindé, Rioverde, Muisne, Cube and the parish council of Majua. The highest expense was that of the Municipality of Quinindé, which spent $135,000 on eight events for Santa’s arrival, carried out between December 17 and 31, 2021. For its part, the Municipality of the provincial capital spent another $ 100,000 in its Festival of Christmas traditions 2021.

In Pichincha, local governments spent $297,258 on Christmas and 65% of that amount came from the Prefecture of Pichincha, which allocated $193,600 for the organization, execution and promotion of the event Pichincha Productive Reactivation Expo lives Christmas 2021, which was held at the Quito Exhibition Center, from December 10 to 12. The same entity spent another $24,000 on the concerts Together again. The Municipality of Quito was much more austere and spent a total of $18,395 in three events. Two organized through the Teatro Sucre Foundation, which hired the musicians Margarita Laso and Daniel Páez, and their respective accompanying musicians for the Christmas project in the territory: let’s live Christmas 2021.
