More than 100,000 quality jobs in the industry need to be recovered in Metropolitan Lima

After the drop in economic activities in the first year of the pandemic, where up to 90% of the manufacturing business fabric was paralyzed, the national industry resumed hiring personnel in 2021. Thus, after the loss of 158,000 jobs in 2020, 134,000 jobs were created in the last year, placing the labor force at levels close to the pre-pandemic stage of 2019 (-3.7%), according to the Institute of Economic and Social Studies (IEES) of the National Society of Industries (SNI).

However, while three years ago, for every underemployment there were 2 quality jobs; in 2021 the structure was different, since for each underemployment created, only 0.8 suitable jobs were created.

According to the IEES of the SNI, the productive drop in the industrial sector in six of the last eight years (2014-2021), has had a negative impact on job creation.

In 2014, 713,000 registered jobs in the manufacturing sector and that level has been declining, reaching 654,000 jobs in 2019 and 629,000 last year. This situation is exacerbated by the precariousness of the labor market.

“Despite the fact that the labor force in 2021 is not that far from that registered in 2019, according to the level of employment, the difference is gigantic. There are 105,000 quality jobs in the industry to recover in Metropolitan Lima, meanwhile, underemployment has increased considerably, with 80,000 workers who have started working in this condition”, explained the IEES of the SNI.

These 2021 results change the structure of the workforce in the manufacturing sector in Metropolitan Lima. In 2019, suitable jobs represented 67.6% of all jobs, while their share fell to 53.6% in the last year.
