Mobile Internet: average speed in 4G networks increased in all operating companies at the end of 2021

The Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel) reported this past Tuesday, January 25, that the mobile speed average of the 4G networks in the national territory to connect to social networks, participate in video calls, use applications, among others, experienced growth at the end of 2021 to 10.52 Mbps (megabits per second).

According to the information compiled in December by the Mobile Internet Monitoring Panel, all operating companies increased their performance in the download indicator (download) compared to the previous month. A) Yes, Movistar it did so by 0.03 Mbps, while Bitel added 0.37 Mbps, Entel advanced by 0.39 Mbps and Clear scaled 0.48 Mbps.

With the increase, Entel obtained an average national mobile speed of 11.53 Mbps and positioned itself as the company with the best performance for the second consecutive month, followed by Claro (11.36 Mbps), Movistar (10.25 Mbps) and Bitel (7.19 Mbps), according to user experience data collected and analyzed by the regulator’s tool.

Seven regions exceed the national average speed

The average mobile speed for 4G networks rose in almost all regions of the country, with the exception of Madre de Dios, where a slight decline was observed. Osiptel’s Mobile Internet Monitoring Panel also reported that speed was higher than average in seven regions.

The measurement showed that Callao (11.9 Mbps), Lima (11.3 Mbps), Tacna (11.1 Mbps), Ica (11.1 Mbps) and Arequipa (11 Mbps) were the regions with the best performance in mobile speed average, while Loreto (7.6 Mbps), Huancavelica (9.2 Mbps), San Martín (9.4 Mbps), Amazonas (9.4 Mbps) and Pasco (9.5 Mbps) experienced the lowest performances. Meanwhile, the increase in performance in the regions of Lambayeque, Puno, Huánuco and Ancash improved their monthly position with respect to the indicator.

At the same time, the Claro company achieved the best result in 12 regions of the country (Arequipa, Moquegua, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura, Puno, Huánuco, Junín, Ancash, San Martín, Huancavelica and Loreto), while Entel did it in 10 regions (Callao, Lima, Tacna, Ica, Cajamarca, Apurímac, Ucayali, Cusco, Ayacucho and Pasco), Movistar in two regions (Madre de Dios and Amazonas) and Bitel in one (Tumbes).

The Mobile Internet Monitoring Panel warned that the 4G coverage time nationwide was 87.42% on average. Movistar was the operator with the best performance at the national level, with a coverage time of 88.84%; followed by Entel (87.24%) and Claro (87.08%), while Bitel was the operator with the lowest performance with 85.88%.

Callao, Lima and Ica with the best performance in average latency for 4G mobile networks

In the last month of 2021, it was observed that latency (an indicator that analyzes whether online content is accessed with greater or lesser delay), at the national level, was reduced favorably to users to an average of 101.63 ms (milliseconds) for 4G networks. Even seven regions presented lower results.

The operating company with the best performance in the indicator was Entel, with a latency of 78.3 ms, below Bitel (86.96 ms) and Movistar (94.18 ms). In contrast, Claro was the operator with the lowest performance with 122.93 ms.

The regions with the best performance in the latency indicator were Callao (92.9 ms), Lima (93.2 ms) and Ica (93.8 ms); while the regions with the lowest performance were Loreto (127.4 ms), Madre De Dios (119.9 ms) and Apurímac (117.8 ms).

Reduced average data packet loss rate on 4G networks to 1.97%

The packet loss rate (a parameter whose poor performance can cause the interruption of a data session or that we receive or send information with delays or incompletely) at the national level was 1.97% in the period of analysis.

Unlike November, the operating company Claro was the operator with the best performance at the national level, with a packet loss of 1.52%, unlike Entel (1.93%) and Movistar (2.58%). Instead, Bitel was the operator with the lowest performance with 2.75%. The regions with the best performance were Callao (1%), Tumbes (1%) and Lima (1.1%); while the regions with the lowest performance were Loreto (10.9%), Amazonas (2.2%) and Ayacucho (2.1%).

Inspection actions

OSIPTEL focuses the inspection actions in the field based on the information analyzed by the Mobile Internet Monitoring Panel, as an input to supervise the places that present poor performance and apply the corresponding corrective mechanisms.
