The banana export sector closed 2021 with the shipment of 376 million boxes, 2.5% less than 2020

The Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) indicated that the destination with the highest participation in 2021 was Europe, which acquired 33% of the offer.

The Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) records that throughout the year 376 million boxes of 18 kilos of the fruit were exported; that is, 10 million boxes less taking into account that in 2020 386 million were sold.

In 2020, 7.41 million boxes were exported on average per week, while in 2021 7.21 million boxes were exported, that is a 3% reduction in boxes placed on the international market.

As reported by the union, the downward trend was something that was maintained for most of the year. In fact, only September and October presented positive growth of 1.9% (28 million boxes) and 16.2% (33 million boxes), respectively.

“The decline in export performance It is mainly attributed to the problems associated with the logistics chain and the increase in shrinkage experienced by banana producers. (product of volcanic eruptions at the beginning of the year and less use of agrochemicals due to certification requirements); which affected the placement of the supply of bananas”, explains the union.

In participation by destinations, Europe was the one who acquired 33% of the Ecuadorian offer (125 million boxes), followed by Russia, which maintained a 22% share until the end of the year. In third and fourth place were the Middle East with 13% and the United States with 10%.

AEBE highlights that the US market stopped showing growth and stabilized at 2020 levels. Africa, for its part, maintains the upward trend and is positioned as the region with the highest growth with 20.1%. This last destination captured 25 million boxes in 2021, about four more than the previous year.

The proportion of fruit exported by each of the ports remained stable with slight variations, reports the export union. Guayaquil was the only port that increased its participation by 0.9%, Puerto Bolívar and Posorja experienced slight reductions of 0.3% and 0.6%, respectively. (I)
