A hundred people have participated in a concentration in the Plaza del Arriaga in Bilbao. There, they have criticized the food sector, which “forces us to produce below cost” and the institutions, for their “lack of support”.
Farmers, ranchers and foresters from Biscay gathered this Friday in Bilbao to denounce that they are “asphyxiated” by some production costs that have risen 30% and that they cannot affect the prices at which they sell to the food sector.
A hundred people, flanked by seven tractors and four cows, have participated in this concentration in the Plaza del Arriaga in Bilbao, under the slogan “Agriculture, livestock and forestry have a future, let’s act responsibly”.
There, they have criticized the food sector, which “forces us to produce below cost” and to the institutions, for their “lack of support.”
They have demanded “the immediate application of the law of the food chain. We cannot accept that distribution continues to be allowed to keep the pan by the handle, condemning prices that continue to not cover production costs.”
The consequence is “a lack of liquidity, because the producers are working at a loss, and find themselves chained to having to sell to a large distribution that impoverishes and ruins them.”
They have also asked for greater coherence from the Basque administrations in their support for family agriculture and livestock, “these should be the strategic farms, and not others”.
