Palm producers identified more than 800 hectares of forests that need to be protected

Grupo Palmas, in collaboration with 242 palm producers in the province of Tocache (San Martín), identified more than 800 hectares that need to be protected due to their high carbon stocks (ARC) and high conservation values (HCV).

The result is part of the landscape-level study of ARC and HCV in Peru, carried out by Grupo Palmas in alliance with the Earthworm Foundation to evaluate and protect forested areas hand in hand with its independent palm producers, and thus reduce the risk of deforestation.

The study was carried out in an area of 161,000 hectares in Tocache – San Martín, where the palm producers that make up the Grupo Palmas production chain are located; With the support of satellite images and field measurements, 60,000 hectares of forests with high carbon stocks and conservation value were identified, which represents 37% of the area studied.

Based on these results, it was possible to identify 831 hectares that need to be protected because they are forests, wetlands, marginal strips or slope areas.

In this way, the project that began in 2018 managed to get palm producers to better plan the use of their farms, considering sustainability criteria.

“Today, consumers, large global producers and financial institutions demand strict sustainability standards for their entire value chain. Aligned with this trend, Grupo Palmas has been building a solid path to have a supply chain with high standards of sustainable supply”, said Renzo Balarezo, general manager of Grupo Palmas.
