The sale of trucks, vans and heavy machinery in 2021 exceeded the figures reached in 2019

The Association of Automotive Companies of Ecuador (Aeade) indicated that, at the end of 2021, these segments grew in double digits compared to the previous year

2021 closed with positive figures for the automotive sector. According to the Association of Automotive Companies of Ecuador (Aeade), the number of units sold in 2020 was exceeded by 39%, but it is still below 2019 by 19%.

At the end of the year, the sector registered the commercialization of more than 119,316 units.

Genaro Baldeon, president of the union, points out that this is a number that “reflects that there is a productive reactivation in the country.” This reactivation, points out the leader, can be evidenced by the performance of three segments that are linked to productive, commercial, mining and industrial activity, such as trucks, motorcycles, vans and heavy machinery.

“These segments allowed the figures of the automotive sector to be sustained and not have a considerable drop,” explained Baldeón.

Trucks, for example, closed the year with a 23% growth in sales nationwide compared to 2019. Until December, 9,761 units were sold; while in 2019 7,915 were reached.

Truck sales rebounded from 2020 by 52% and compared to 2019 it also exceeded the figure. In 2021, in the country, 20,406 vans were sold.

Motorcycles, used in home services, grew by 26% compared to 2020 and 14% compared to 2019. “We show a dynamic of boosting productive activity throughout the country,” said the head of the Aeade.

In the case of heavy machinery, which is a key piece in activities such as mining, reached an increase of 162% compared to 2019. Of 1,107 units sold in 2019, 2,902 were sold until December 2021.

However, the light vehicle segment has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. However, within the light group, the SUV-type models maintain an upward trend in the country, which has led to a decrease in the demand for automobiles.

The Aeade indicated that, until the end of 2021, in the country there is an offer of 506 vehicle models in 105 brands present in the market.

In September, 12,135 vehicles were placed, the largest sale so far in the pandemic

By 2022, the union projects get to place 131,000 units, a recovery to levels similar to those of 2019. However, Baldeón said that this goal may be conditioned by the current circumstances and externalities that could occur this year. For example, logistics problems and shortages of semiconductors.

From the automotive sector It is considered that a measure to boost the activity would be to review the excessive tax burden that is applied to vehicles and, in addition, improve the quality of the fuel that is marketed in the country. (I)
