Since Cobra, the concessionaire of the Majes Siguas II project, wrote a letter to Regional Government of Arequipa to start the process of expiration of the contract, various entities and business associations have spoken.
The Association for the Promotion of National Infrastructure (AFIN) issued a statement stating that ending the megaproject contract would cause serious economic damage to the country, especially to the south.
Among their reasons, they argue that given the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to reactivate the economy. According to government calculations, Majes Siguas II would generate 96,000 jobs in its operation stage.
Likewise, the impact of the project on the economy, during its investment stage, would reach 2.9% of the Gross Domestic Product of Arequipa and in the production stage, 13.9% of GDP.
In this sense, AFIN invokes the Peruvian State to resolve the problem surrounding the disagreement between the concessionaire and the Regional Government of Arequipa over the contract, as well as all those who are involved.
In another part of his statement, he points out that this fact affects the investment climate, when the country has many demands to resolve.
