Chinchero International Airport began the execution of the second stage

At 15 kilometers from the city of Cusco and two kilometers from the town of Chinchero, the technical tests are already being carried out and the design of the Chinchero International Airport is being developed so that, at the latest, in May the execution of the works of the passenger terminal and control tower.

This air terminal aims to be the second largest in the country and eight times larger than the current terminal at the Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.

The Chinchero Consortium, in charge of carrying out the earthworks, reported that there is a 50% progress. On January 4, it delivered sectors E2 and E3, which have an area of ​​approximately 36 hectares, to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC). The next constructions (air terminal and control tower) will be carried out in this space.

These future works, also in charge of the aforementioned consortium, have an execution period of 47 months. Meanwhile, the AICC Consortium is responsible for the supervision of the works.

“This great project longed for by the Cusco people was paralyzed for more than 40 years. Last year it became viable and progress is being made at a good pace, ”said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Juan Silva.

This eco-friendly airport infrastructure will have the capacity to receive more than 5 million passengers per year and the flights will come from South America. This will allow us to capture greater income for our country and the Cusco region due to the expenses that tourists will make.

The project will require an investment of US $ 427 million. The construction of the air terminal will allow to reactivate the economy of the region affected by the pandemic. Once in operation, the Chinchero airport will generate more than 5,000 direct jobs, thus benefiting more than a million people dedicated to tourism, transportation, food, hotels, among other areas.

The MTC will also carry out complementary works such as an exit from Cusco to the Sacred Valley and the highway to Urubamba, as well as road rings around the future airport for the benefit of the local population.
