Coronavirus in Peru: unions ask to encourage vaccination before more curfews

The Foreign Trade Society (Comex Peru) He asked the Government to re-evaluate the curfew plan and, instead, speed up vaccination with an emphasis on the third dose, in addition to overseeing compliance with protocols for gauging, distancing and use of a mask.

According to a study by Apoyo Consultoría, prepared at the request of Comex, vaccination and the lifting of restrictions have allowed economic activity in lagging sectors to become more dynamic.

On the contrary, the report ensures that generalized curfews do not contribute to the reduction of deaths and have a negative impact on economic activity. In this sense, Comex states that extending the current curfew by an additional three hours per day “would significantly reduce restaurant employment,” which would affect the care staff, kitchen, cleaning, security, among others.

Jessica Luna, General Manager of Comex, explained that the GDP of restaurants is reduced with each hour of extra curfew that the Government gives. In this sense, a 1% drop in PBI of restaurants is related to a 0.7% contraction in employment in the sector.

“When the touchdown begins at 11 pm, the restaurants are forced to close at 9 pm, because they have to dedicate time to cleaning and leaving their workers, who will not find transportation to return home,” said Luna.

In this regard, the former Minister of Health Óscar Ugarte said that, in effect, the statistics in the last year have put on the table the validity of establishing very rigid curfew hours, aimed at reducing mortality in citizens. Nevertheless, Ugarte He stressed that the control of businesses is essential.

“The breach of capacity also occurs on the day. Therefore, responsible social behavior has a more important effect. We are on the verge of returning to classes ”, he explained.
