Sale of electric vehicles grew 297.5% compared to the prepandemic level

The sale of hybrid and electric vehicles in 2021 in Peru exceeded the prepandemic level by 297.5%. And it is that at the end of last year 1,455 units were sold compared to 366 in 2019, according to the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP).

Meanwhile, the result obtained is 151.7% higher at the end of 2020, when 578 units were sold, according to information from the National Superintendency of Public Records (Sunarp).

Only in last December, 242 units were marketed, which meant an increase of 160.2% to the result of the last month of the year 2020.

“The commitment of the authorities to implement public policies that promote in our country the modernization of the vehicle fleet, more efficient and less polluting, is of vital importance, a goal that could be achieved -precisely- with a greater entry of electrified vehicles,” he said. Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies of the AAP.

The union representative explained that there is much evidence in the experience of other neighboring countries that have made concrete decisions to promote the sustainable development of transport, “by bringing with it various benefits to its users (fuel savings, lower maintenance costs) and to society. in general, such as less pollution, less probability of traffic accidents due to its higher safety and reliability standards, among others ”.

Balance

When disaggregating the available information, according to type of technology, it is observed that the most sold eco-friendly vehicles in 2021 were conventional hybrids or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 1,364 units, followed by plug-in hybrids o PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 58 units and further behind are the pure electric ones or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with 33 units.

At the end of 2021, their participation in total new vehicle sales was 0.83%, above the 0.46% registered the previous year.

In that sense, he remarked, although eco-friendly vehicles have been gaining space in the country, we are still very far from countries that are benchmarks in the region. “A clear example is Colombia, where 17,702 units were sold, 12 times more than in Peru, and reaching a penetration ratio of 7.07% in the market,” he said.

Among the reasons that explain the greater size of the Colombian market for clean technology vehicles compared to Peru, the lower tax burdens on the sale of the aforementioned vehicles stand out, as well as tariff benefits on imports, in addition to other advantages such as the possibility of being exempt of certain policies regarding vehicle mobility, such as pico and license plate.

To date, around 50 electric stations are operating in Peru, distributed in 17 departments. Lima is the city that has the largest number of electric stations, with about 30 stations.
