These were the most profitable stocks and sectors on the US Stock Exchange in 2021

The Stock Exchange of the United States has provided great results during 2021, which allowed the index of the 500 largest companies in the United States, according to Standard & Poor’s (S & P500), to beat its levels of all-time highs up to 70 times .

The Energy, Real Estate and Financial and Technology sectors were the strongest during 2021 and with the best prospects during 2022, according to an analysis carried out by Renta4.

Sectors with double digit gains

– Energy sector: this sector obtained a profitability of almost 50%, mainly supported by the rise in the price of oil.

“During the last few years, it has been worse compared to other raw materials such as copper. Let us remember that it was particularly hit during 2020, ending that year with a negative profitability of 37%, “said Jaime Aritio, Renta4’s Latin America Business Deputy Manager.

– Real estate and financial sector: the real estate sector is favored because it acts as a refuge against inflation since its income is linked to its rise. For its part, the financial sector benefits from the expected rate hike – three in 2022 – which will cause its margins to widen. In both cases, high inflation and rate hikes are expected to allow these sectors to continue growing in 2022.

– Technology: although the profitability of last year has not been so high, it has had a constant growth. During the last three years, this sector has achieved a rise of 181%. This is due, in part, to the extraordinary performance of Apple or Microsoft, which account for more than 40% of the index and which have had truly exceptional performance over the last three years.

According to Renta4, when analyzing the equity side, it was observed that growth has been dominated mainly by energy companies. If it is filtered by issuer size, we will see that it has been more intense in the Russell 2000, where we find the small caps.

Finally, on the part of the Nasdaq, Renta4 highlights Lucid Motors that just joined this index, a few weeks ago, along with several cybersecurity services companies that stand out in its top 20.
