World food prices increased 28.1% on average in 2021

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that food prices in the world had an average annual increase of 28% in 2021.

Last December there was a slight drop of 0.9% compared to November, and with an increase of 23.1% compared to the December index of the previous year.

“With regard to 2021 as a whole, calculating the averages for the whole year, the price index of the food of the FAO reached an average of 125.7 points, which represents 28.1% more than the previous year ”, specified the entity, based in Rome.

The price index for cereals reached its highest annual level since 2012 and averaged 27.2% higher than in 2020, with a soaring of 44.1% in the case of corn and 31.3% % in that of wheat.

The rice price index, on the other hand, fell 4%. On the other hand, that of sugar rose 29.8% compared to the previous year and reached its highest level since 2016. While that of meat registered an increase of 12.7%.

Regarding 2022, FAO noted that there is still uncertainty.

“While high prices are normally expected to lead to increased production, high input costs, the current pandemic The global world and conditions of increasing climatic uncertainty leave little room for optimism regarding the recovery of more stable business conditions even in 2022, ″ said Abdolreza Abbassian, an economist with the organization.
