Sunat intervened smuggled goods for US $ 130 million in 2021

During 2021, the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) carried out more than 11,300 customs control actions throughout the country to deal with smuggling, achieving the intervention of merchandise for more than US $ 130.96 million.

Thus, it awarded 1,468 tons of some of these products, mainly in favor of health personnel and the vulnerable population.

The results achieved this year represent an increase of 67% compared to the interventions carried out during 2020 (US $ 78.6 million) and 4.5% compared to 2019 (US $ 123.3 million).

The main products seized by Customs were clothing and footwear (36.59%), other made-up textile articles (6.48%), vehicles and their parts (5.12%), cigarettes (4.80%), toys (4.55%).

In the case of products related to COVID-19 (found in different areas, such as textile items -masks, special vehicles, medical supplies, personal protection items, among others), these represent 14.6% of the intervention .

Compared to 2020, there was a significant increase of 336% in clothing intervention, going from more than US $ 5.5 million to US $ 24.13 million, only until the end of November.

Regarding the interventions of smuggled cigarettes, the increase in the value of the seized merchandise was 180%, going from US $ 1.12 million in 2020, to US $ 3.12 million in 2021.

Likewise, 251 actions were carried out with the illicit traffic of merchandise in the different customs control points, whether air, sea, river and land, intervening more than 10 tons of drugs (10,123.51 kg). In some of these operations, the role of the dogs of the K-9 program was decisive.

In relation to the incidents reported by the alleged commission of customs crimes, of the 11,388 customs control actions carried out at the national level, 393 reports indicating a customs crime were communicated to the Public Ministry for an amount of US $ 33.37 million, representing an increase of 375.15% compared to 2020 (US $ 8.89 million).
