Savings of S / 70 million for Peruvian calls in Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia at no additional cost

The Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel) estimated that more than S / 70 million in savings would be generated in 2022 in the pockets of Peruvian travelers traveling through member countries of the Andean Community (CAN), after the elimination of the surcharge for the service international roaming for postpaid mobile lines, which began to apply from January 1 of that year.

By virtue of the execution of Decision 854 adopted by the CAN, from this year local rates will apply for postpaid mobile service users using calls, text messages (SMS) or data when visiting Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. That is, they will have the same rate conditions as in the country of origin.

According to Osiptel projections, more than 650,000 Peruvian citizens who move through these countries would benefit directly from the application of this measure, which contributes to minimizing the digital divide and raise the quality of life of citizens by reducing the costs of communication between these countries.

Considerations

For the correct execution of the measure, postpaid users who choose to travel to any of the countries of the Andean Community They must contact their operator in advance to activate the service.

Thus, to receive a call from any part of Peru, whether from a landline or mobile phone, during the stay in Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia, the operating company will respect the collection of this communication as a local call, according to the conditions of the contracted postpaid plan. In the case of data, the MB (megabytes) will be discounted from the plan as if it were in Peru.

Non-compliance with the correct execution of the measure by the operating companies will be considered as infractions and will activate control actions by Osiptel, as detailed in the norm that establishes the applicable sanctioning regime within the framework of Decision 854 of the CAN .

It is important to mention that the elimination of connection charges between countries of the Andean Community is an initiative that has been progressively implemented with technical support from Osiptel. In July 2020, voice and data connection charges were reduced by 90%. Thus, Peruvians accessed the lowest data rate in the CAN.
