After a decade, Midagri announces the “V National Agricultural Census” for 2022

Return the Cenagro. The Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Víctor Maita, reported that, after a decade of long wait, the “V National Agricultural Census” will be carried out nationwide in 2022.

In an interview with the magazine Agronoticias, the head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) said that his sector will request additional budgetary resources for this activity during the first quarter of 2022, so that pre-census activities can begin during the first part of the year and the execution of the Census during the second half or, at the latest, at the beginning of 2023.

“We hope that the V Agricultural Census is carried out in 2022, after a decade of the previous census, ″ remarked Maita Frisancho.

As it is recalled, the last National Agricultural Census (Cenagro) was developed in 2012, during the government of former President Ollanta Humala. Since then, no real and updated figures have been available for one of the fundamental sectors for the country’s development.

According to that census, 30.1% of the total surface of the national territory is dedicated to the development of agricultural activity. Thus, the Sierra has 57.5% of the total agricultural area; La Selva, 31.1%; and the Coast, 11.5%.

In 2012, the number of agricultural producers in the country reached 2 million 260,973, increasing by 496,000 producers compared to 1994, from the III census.

What is the Agricultural Census?

The Agricultural Census, allows to know the structure of the agricultural sector, in an updated and disaggregated way at the level of each district of the country that carries out agricultural activities. It provides basic information for preparing development policies and plans that respond to the needs of the agricultural sector and for monitoring compliance with the Millennium Goals.

It constitutes the baseline for the estimates obtained by other sources such as surveys and interviews with qualified informants on the productive variables. In addition, it allows to have a sampling frame that will serve as a basis for conducting periodic surveys of the sector that facilitate obtaining more detailed information from the agricultural units.
