Tourism in Peru: 3.6 million projected visitors for 2025, even below 2019

The tourism sector in Peru continues in the process of recovery. It is estimated that at the end of 2025, the country will have received 3.6 million foreign touristsaccording to projections of the head of the Peruvian Association of Receptive and Internal Tourism Operators (Apour), Enrique Quiñones. Most of these visitors will come from Chile and the United States, two of the most important issuing markets for the country.

In 2024, the arrival of international tourists reached 3.2 million, which represented an increase of 29% compared to the previous year. This growth reflects a positive trend in tourism reactivation, although it is still below prepaandia levels. In January 2025, the flow of international visitors was 264,064, registering a 5.1% increase compared to the same month of the previous year.

Main tourist emitting countries

The main countries of origin of tourists visiting Peru are still Chiliwith 74,000 visitors in January, followed by USA (41,000), Bolivia (21,000), Ecuador (19,000), Colombia (14,000) and Brazil (14,000). These figures reinforce the importance of these markets in the tourism promotion strategy.

The president of Apour, Enrique Quiñones, highlighted the need to strengthen tourism promotion to reach the figures of 2019, the year in which international tourism in Peru reached its highest point.

“At present, we have one million 100 thousand tourists less compared to that period. It is essential to reinforce the promotion of Peru in Latin American countries and in the United States to increase the flow of visitors,” he said.

New Jorge Chávez airport for the middle of the year

Quiñones recently expressed his question about the viability of the date scheduled for March 30 and raised the possibility of postpone the opening until June or July to guarantee a safe and efficient start of operations.

“I would not be surprised that in the next few days the change of date was announced so that the air terminal operates with the greatest safety and without risks,” said Quiñones.

Apotur joins other business unions that have expressed concern about the inauguration of the airport, considered key to strengthening receptive tourism in Peru.

Despite this uncertainty, Quiñones assured that his guild will support all necessary measures so that the transition to the new terminal is a success for the benefit of the local and international passenger, as well as to facilitate the arrival of new airlines to the country.
