The president of the Peruvian Association of Receptive and Internal Tourism Operators (Apotur), Enrique Quiñones, expressed his uncertainty regarding whether the new Jorge Chávez International Airport will be inaugurated on March 30.
Apour It adds to other business unions and agencies that have expressed doubts about the viability of the opening date of the country’s main air terminal. “I would not be surprised that in the next few days the change of date was announced so that the air terminal operates with the greatest safety and without risks,” Quiñones said.
The union representative suggested that the inauguration be postponed by the end of June or early July, in order to guarantee optimal airport operation. However, he assured that ApotuR will support the operations of the new terminal so that they are successful for the benefit of the local and foreign passenger, as well as to facilitate the entry of new airlines to the country.
Growth tourism, but without reaching prepaandemics figures
On the other hand, Quiñones estimated that 2025 will close with the arrival of approximately 3.6 million foreign tourists to Peru, mainly from Chile and the United States. In 2024, the country received more than 3.2 million international visitors, which represented a 29% growth compared to the previous year.
During January 2025, 264,064 international tourists entered the country, reflecting a 5.1% increase against the same month of 2024. The main issuing markets were Chile (74,000 visitors), United States (41,000), Bolivia (21,000), Ecuador (19,000), Colombia (14,000) and Brazil (14,000).
Despite this growth, the holder of Apour He pointed out that the sector is still below prepaandemics levels, with a deficit of 1.1 million tourists compared to 2019. Therefore, it considered it essential to reinforce tourism promotion in Latin America and the United States to recover the flow of international visitors.
