The last conjunctural progress report of the economy prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics revealed that, during January, fishing production registered a growth of 23.51% compared to the same month of the previous year. This performance was due to greater extraction of species of maritime origin for indirect human consumption (26.50%).
The extraction of anchovy to make flour and fish oil increased from 122,876 tons in January 2024 to 508.202 ton in the same month of 2025. The ports that excelled due to their high level of landing were Chimbote, Malabrigo, Ilo, Pacocha, Supe and Carquín.
On the other hand, a reduction in the fishing destined for direct human consumption (-32.91%), as well as in frozen sectors (-51.5%), canned elaboration (-12.3%) and consumption in a fresh state (-7.4%); However, there was an increase in cure fishing (42.3%).
Regarding fishing of continental origin, this activity was reduced by 0.83%due to the lower availability of species for fresh state consumption (-2.9%), although it increased fishing for frozen (7.5%) and curing preparation (6.6%).
Mining and upward hydrocarbons in January: the factors
Despite facing a high price context of small metals and social conflicts, mining still grows with low rates. In January, it only reached a growth of 1.39% due to the progress of the metal mining activity by 3.20%. This sector reported an increase in copper production (7.3%), molybdenum (24.0%), silver (4.5%), iron (3.1%) and tin (0.3%). However, gold extraction (-15.9%) decreased, as well as zinc (-12.2%) and lead (-4.9%).
For its part, the hydrocarbons subsector experienced a 9.12%drop, based on the lowest exploitation of natural gas liquids (-18.3%) and natural gas (-11.6%). In contrast, crude oil extraction showed a recovery of 8.8%.
Electric production grows and internal cement consumption falls
During the first month of the year, the electricity subsector recorded an advance of 1.90%driven by the increase in the generation of wind-slope renewable energy (28.39%) and of hydroelectric origin (3.41%). However, the generation of energy of thermoelectric origin decreased 7.7%.
Regarding the consumption of cement, the INEI reported that its contraction was 2.93% in January, compared to the similar month of 2023. This result was explained by the lowest dynamism of works of private origin and self -construction.
