Within the framework of the Pisco Sour’s Day celebration, Carlos Mejía, secretary of the Viticultural Committee of the National Society of Industries (SNI), highlighted the need for greater support from public entities promoting national products to face the decrease in the value of exports of this emblematic drink of Peru.
According to the figures of the SNI wine committee, based on data from the SUNAT-ADUANAS, the Pisco exports They reached a value of US $ 8,591,430 in 2024, which represents a 9.8% contraction compared to the previous year.
“The more pisco sells, this means more income for our treasury. In the Peruvian case, there is a direct relationship between the decrease in the sale of our pisco in the international markets and the impulse that the State is giving, while Chile has managed to increase the exports of its brandy, since they are managing to advance with the support from his promotion agency, ”Mejía lamented.
Main destinations of Pisco Peruano
The United States remains the main destination of Pisco exports, concentrating approximately 40% of total sales, although with minor volumes compared to 2023. Spain and Japan occupy second and third place, respectively, in the ranking of markets in destination.
It should be noted that the year 2022 marked a milestone for the sector, by registering the highest export levels with sales greater than US $ 11 million.
QUALITY – PRICE
Carlos Mejía stressed that Pisco is a high quality product, with a distinctive production process and a unique versatility for the development of high -end cocktails. Therefore, he stressed the importance of focusing its international marketing in premium segments, competing in terms of quality and not price compared to other spirits.
The Pisco must also be promoted in the domestic market and enhance its responsible consumption.
What kind of alcohol is the Peruvian pisco?
The Peruvian pisco is a grape brandy, that is, a distilled liquor from the fermentation of the grape must. It occurs exclusively in Peru, in the coastal regions of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna.
Who created Pisco, Peru or Chile?
The controversy between Peru and Chile regarding the designation of origin of the Pisco has recently intensified after the certification by the UNESCO of historical documents that would support the Peruvian origin of this emblematic drink.
This conflict has generated an answer from the Chilean government, which supports its position arguing that more than 50 countries, including the United States and the European Union, recognize the Chilean Pisco as a product of national exclusivity.
The General Archive of the Nation of Peru reported this week that UNESCO has certified manuscripts dating from 1587 to 1613, which show the Peruvian origin of the Pisco. “These valuable documents include historical testimonies that testify to the production and trade of grape brandy, called today Pisco,” said the Peruvian archive.
