Conveagro rejects Midagri proposal to suspend mangoes sowing for three years

The overproduction of mango in regions such as Piura and Lambayeque has been affecting the economy of farmers. Given the fall in prices and the lack of buyers, many of them choose to give the fruit or carry out protest actions to get the attention of the authorities.

And it is that the excessive offer of mangoes has exceeded the capacity of local markets and export. Far from addressing this problem with empathy, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Ángel Manero, has invoked producers not to install new plantations of this fruit in the next three years.

The response of the agrarian guilds was swift. According to Luis Cruz, manager of the National Convention of Agro (Conveagro), this approach of the head of the Midagri It has no technical livelihood nor is it endorsed by statistical data. In his opinion, excess mango production is due to weather factors and market contraction.

“If it is a problem for a consequence of something conjunctural, it has nothing to do with the hectare or stop sowing, or cutting what has already been sown. How dare to say that the problem is that there is an excess of plants planted? And by That, you should not sow anymore.

In tune with this statement, Grade’s economist and researcher, Eduardo Zegarra, said the internal mango price is seasonal and in these months tends down. Being a specific phenomenon, it should not lead to formulate extreme proposals that do not solve the underlying problem.

“The Ministry of Agriculture could have coordinated with the Ministry of Production and Companies to see some type of purchase mechanism of this surplus, perhaps with some public support. And that would have, in part, solve the problem that is conjunctural, Not structural.

Regarding Manero’s approach so that the regions such as Lambayeque and Piura focus on alternative crops with lower water consumption such as raspberry and cotton, the leader of Conveagro He indicated that this plant has an almost zero profitability.

“Following the FTAs signed by Peru, it began to enter cotton and subsidized products in the countries of origin. Then, they enter a very low price and currently, 15,000 hectares will be sown, of the 270,000 that were sown before because it has stopped Be profitable for the producer, “he said.

Faced with this problem that affects mango producers, Conveagro highlighted the need for the Government to drive a financial rescue program, extend their debts and inject working capital for the maintenance of their plants.

They question Midagri statements about Chlimper Law

In recent statements to Channel N, the head of the Midagri Ángel Manero emphasized the importance of Congress approved the opinion that grants tax benefits for large agro -export companies, which is pending discussion in the Permanent Commission. In his opinion, investments are needed to attract the purpose of betting on the mango frozen industry.

According to Eduardo Zegarra, “investments are not attracted based on tax exemptions that have no justification.” Along those line, he recalled that the renewed Chllimper 2.0 law will imply S/21,000 million of lower collection in the next ten years.

“The minister is taking advantage of any issue to introduce this issue of agro -exporters dedicated to tax rentism. The MEF has been very clear in warning of the foracious fiscal that generates this law, with a situation of fiscal deficit aggravating itself,” he argued.
