GDP: economy advanced 11.83% in August 2021

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that, in August 2021, national production increased by 11.83% thanks to the positive behavior of most economic sectors, with the exception of Fishing.

According to the National Production Technical Report of the INEI, national production increased by 18.59% and in the annualized period September 2020-August 2021 it grew 10.46% in the period January-August 2021.

“It is worth mentioning that in the base month for comparison, August 2020, the third phase of economic reactivation was in force, in which a series of activities were suspended and others operated with restrictions according to the qualification of the State of Sanitary Emergency” , specified the entity.

In the overall positive of national production for August 2021 (11.83%), the performance of the Manufacturing sectors stood out; Construction; Commerce; Transportation, Storage and Messaging; Accommodation and Restaurants; as well as Other Services. The best three were:

Performance of Accommodation and Restaurants doubled

The Accommodation and Restaurants sector grew by 96.48% due to the greater activity of the accommodation subsector (2,277.27%) and the restaurants subsector (95.31%). The result of the restaurants subsector was explained by a higher demand due to the relaxation of restrictions, extension of hours, opening of branches, commercial alliances with financial and telecommunication entities.

It should be noted that, during the month of August of last year, the group worked with the delivery service and in the modality of care in the room with a capacity of 40%, within the framework of the National Health Emergency in the presence of COVID-19 in the country.

It is important to note that this sector, one of the most affected by the confinement, does not recover the production level of 2019.

Manufacturing Sector grew by 11.55%

The INEI reported that the Manufacturing sector increased by 11.55% supported by the positive result of its two components: non-primary subsector (15.03%) and the primary subsector (0.24%).

The increase in the non-primary subsector was determined by the higher production of the consumer goods industry (10.36%), intermediate goods (18.83%) and capital goods (2.19%). Likewise, the primary subsector increased due to the greater manufacture of petroleum refining products (27.8%), meat processing and preservation (2.5%) and sugar processing (1.1%)

On the contrary, the branches of fish processing and preservation decreased (-21.2%), as well as the manufacture of primary precious metal products (-3.4%).

Transport, Storage and Messaging Sector

Transportation, Storage and Messaging increased 32.76% due to the favorable result of the transportation subsector (32.95%) and storage and messaging (32.38%).

In the transportation subsector, there was a greater activity in land transport and pipelines (18.4%) due to the effect of higher road traffic, both passengers (28.4%) and cargo (7.3%); as well as rail transport (82.2%).

In addition, transportation by air increased (420.8%). The storage and courier subsector increased by 32.38% due to increased activity in postal and courier services (25.4%), as well as storage and transport support activities (32.8%).
