Before completing its first year of operations in the hands of Petroperú, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) has decided to launch early the tender for lots I and VI of Talara for the private sector, despite the fact that the temporary contract was for 24 months.

Industry sources informed The Republic A breakfast will be held next Wednesday to announce the new tender for the two northwest lots, which recorded an average combined production of 2,253 barrels per day (bpd) in July. The contracts were due to expire in October 2025.

Lots I and VI were temporarily awarded to Petroperú in October 2023. Both Minem and Perupetro, the agency in charge of promoting hydrocarbon deposits in the country, clarified at the time that the contracts were only signed to prevent the fields from ceasing production.

Petroperú was to carry out 10 reconditioning works in Lot VI and another 6 in Lot I, in addition to providing maintenance to the facilities and assets. At the moment, it is unknown whether the state oil company has made progress with the investments required by Perupetro in the original agreement.

The previous Minem project contemplated recovering lots I, VI, Z-2B and X for the public company. The only buyer of crude oil in the area is the new Talara Refinery, although at international prices. The lot that represents the greatest losses for Petroperú is the third of those mentioned above.

In addition to Z-69 (formerly Z-2B), Petroperú will continue to receive income from 40% of Lot X of Talara – which it owns in association with 60% of the North American company De Jong, under the OIG brand – whose average production in the seventh month of the year was 7,754 bpd, still declining.
