Agricultural production slows in June, but records 6.6% growth in the first half of 2024

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) reported that, in the first half of the year, the agricultural sector experienced a growth of 4.5%, driven mainly by the production of the agricultural subsector, benefiting from improved weather conditions.

Only between January and June the subsector agricultural increased by (+6.6%), driven by the higher production of quinoa +109% (in Puno, Ayacucho and Junín); dry broad beans +59.2% (in Puno, Cusco and Huancavelica) as a result of a larger planted area; blueberries +43.7% (in La Libertad, Ica and Ancash), among others.

The growth of crops such as starchy corn +41.4% (in Apurímac, Huancavelica and Cusco); potato +24.0% (in Puno, Apurímac and Ayacucho); alfalfa +12.0% (in Puno, Apurímac and Cusco); paddy rice +11.4% (in Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad), among others, was also highlighted.

Likewise, the subsector livestock The production of pork increased by 0.6% in this period. The growth was mainly attributed to the higher production of pork, which increased by 5.0% (in Lima, Ica and La Libertad), fattening turkey, which registered an increase of 29.1% due to a higher harvest in Lima, beef +1.5% (in Huánuco, Lima and Amazonas) and chicken with a growth of 0.3%, caused by a recovery in the placements of BB chickens in the regions of Lima and San Martín.

Agricultural sector: but June production fell

However, in June the agricultural sector registered a decrease of 1.6% due to lower olive and avocado production due to weather conditions, which affected flowering and fruiting, early potato and quinoa harvests in previous months and delayed blueberry harvests.

However, there were increases in the production of passion fruit +51.6% (in Lima); paprika +48.8% (greater planted and harvested area in Arequipa, Lima and Ica); onion +45.8% (in Arequipa, Ica and La Libertad); dry beans +32.3% (in Amazonas, Huancavelica and Piura), among others.

In addition, the increase in paddy rice crops was highlighted +31.0% (greater harvested area in Piura and Lambayeque); wheat +12.0% (in Piura, Ayacucho and La Libertad); starchy corn +11.2% (greater production in Huancavelica, Junín and Amazonas) and others.

In that month, livestock production registered an increase of 1.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. This result was due to the higher chicken production, which increased by 2.8% due to the greater placement of baby chickens in regions such as Lima, La Libertad and Arequipa.

Likewise, pork production grew by 4.3% in Lima, Ica and Arequipa and beef +1.2% in Huánuco, Amazonas and Puno due to the increased export of meat for human consumption.
